Think granola is only for wool-sock, Birkenstock wearing, wannabe hippies? Think again. These oats of goodness will rock your world and leave you wanting to plant trees and compost your neighbor’s dinner leftovers. Not to put out high expectations, but this stuff is sexydeliciousness… fo realz. I am going to give you the original recipe that my REAL life hippie friend Lauren gave to me, and then tell you a few alterations I made due to my lack of supplies. I have had the chance to snack on Lauren’s version numerous times. It is amazing.
1 cup oats (uncooked)
1/2 cup hemp protein powder
1/2 cup flax seeds, ground (you’ll have to get these at a health store – they’ll be in a fridge)
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 cup sesame seeds
1/2 cup almonds, diced
1/2 cup apple, diced
1/4 hemp oil
1/4 cup molasses (I use black strap molasses)
2 Tbsp apple juice
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp sea salt
I substituted the hemp oil for coconut oil, apple juice for applesauce, added ¼ cup of unsweetened coconut, aaand didn’t use the hemp protein powder. OH and I added two portions of love; I think that must have helped because mine still turned out delicious.
Cook at 350 for about 40 minutes on a cookie sheet. I would keep a close eye on these badboys while they are in the oven. This recipe is easy to burn if you’re not paying attention, so try not to have a nap while cooking (which is always a good rule of thumb to live by, anyway). Move the granola around on the pan every 20 min or so.
Why is this sexy dish so delish? Well, oats are loaded with great things to fuel your body. Not only are they high in fiber, but according to The Worlds Healthiest Foods.com, “Oats, oat bran, and oatmeal contain a specific type of fiber known as beta-glucan. Since 1963, study after study has proven the beneficial effects of this special fiber on (lowering) cholesterol levels.”
So there you have it. Put on your hemp pants, grab your acoustic guitar and get yourself cooking.
